Purpose of the study

The purpose of the study is to collect critically important information on parents’ experiences on their children’s well-being and studies, home-school cooperation and parenthood at the upper secondary level.  

The results are primarily used in the advocacy and specialist work of Suomen Vanhempainliitto and Hem och Skola i Finland, including projects for developing home-school cooperation that fosters the well-being of children, youth and families, both in the parents’ everyday life and at the decision-making level of education and upbringing. The materials may also be disclosed in anonymised format for scientific research

Participation and consent

Participating in the survey is completely voluntary and participation does not require a separate permission to conduct research since the respondents are adults. Before taking the survey, a participant has the opportunity to view this study description. By responding to the survey, you acknowledge that your participation in the survey is based on informed consent

Data protection and anonymity

The survey is completely anonymous and it collects no personal data, such as names, contact information or codes that allow you to be identified. 

The survey asks for some background information, such as gender, highest level of education and employment status. These pieces of information are used for group-level investigation and breaking down the results, but the identity of an individual respondent cannot be determined from these pieces of information alone or even when combined with the other responses. 

The study complies with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to the extent it applies to anonymous data collection, and the guidelines of the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity TENK. Since no personal data is collected or processed in an identifiable form, no separate privacy statement is needed

Research material and its collection

The material is collected via an electronic survey form in Webropol. Webropol is a Finnish information system that meets the requirements of GDPR and national data protection legislation and is suitable for secure collection and storage of research material. 

Storage of the material

The research material is stored securely in the Webropol system and, if necessary, transferred to the organisation’s secure server. The material is stored for at least 10 years in accordance with ethical principles of research. The material is not used for any other purpose than the ones specified in this study description. 

Use and disclosure of the material

The material is used for development, advocacy and expert work of Suomen Vanhempainliitto and Hem och Skola i Finland. In addition, quantitative material can be disclosed for the member associations of the alliance if it supports the association’s own advocacy and development efforts. 

The member associations are parents’ associations of schools or municipal parents’ associations that support the well-being of children and youth in schools and educational institutions locally and regionally. 

However, to preserve the anonymity of the respondents, the material will not be disclosed to a local or regional member association if the number of respondents in the region is less than 100. Anonymised material may also be disclosed to third parties for research purposes only, on the condition that the recipient undertakes to follow data protection legislation and ethical principles of research. 

Potential risks and adverse effects

Participating in the study causes no physical or mental risks to the respondent. The questions can give rise to thoughts associated with parenting or the well-being of the young person. If necessary, you can contact the investigator. 

Benefits

The study produces valuable information that supports the development of home-school cooperation, parent participation and promotion of the well-being of youth in upper secondary education.
